Born and raised in Moorestown, New Jersey, Burt graduated from Moorestown High School in 1972 and graduated from Fordham University Business College in the Class of 1976. He joined Intercontinental Hotels in New York City following graduation. In 1978 Burt was named General Manager of the Port-o-Call Hotel in Ocean City and moved to town as a year-round resident.

Burt left hotel management in 1988 after obtaining his Real Estate Sales Associate License and joined a large Ocean City firm as Vice President and Owner. He received his GRI designation and Brokers License in 1990. In 1998 Burt opened Goldcoast Sotheby's International Realty.

Burt was President of the Ocean City Board of REALTORS® in 1997, was named REALTOR® of the Year in 1999 and continues to be one of Ocean City's top producers, with Circle of Excellence Awards from 1985 to the present with annual sales between 25 and 50 million dollars. He was President of the Ocean City Upper Township Rotary Club in 2006.

Burt resides in his bayfront home with his wife Susan and two children, Emily and Burton III. His outside interests include snow skiing, snow mobiling, boating, and golf.
